EUD welcomes new Croatian member by hosting a discussion on the EU and its system of values
    
 

Wednesday 11th December, EUDemocrats together with its latest member Dr. sc. Don Ivan Grubišić, MP, hosted a discussion on the European Union and its system of values (Europska unija I sustav vrijednosti”). EUD’s Slovenian member Prof. Dr. Gorazd Drevensek and EUD Secretary-General Richard Byfält also participated in the panel discussion.

 

During the discussion, which was attended by approximately 30 persons, EUD participants stressed the need to increase transparency and accountability in EU decision making as well as strictly applying the subsidiarity principle. EUD participants also stressed that national democracy must be preserved and strengthened and that Croatia should aim to have an open, public and factual debate on its EU membership which involves citizens and avoids taboos.

 

Dr. sc. Don Ivan Grubišić is the founder of the Croatian Academic Association – A Man Above all and has delivered over 600 public lectures on behalf of this association. He is also the initiator of a number of projects such as the Croatian candlestick, Person Dialogue - Person of the Year, and the Alliance for a Civil and Ethical Croatia, based on the Croatian Charter ´96 . He has written or edited over 30 books and participates in many scientific symposia and roundtables. He has also received several awards for his work including: an annual prize awarded by the city of Split, a national award for promoting science from the Croatian Parliament, the President Stjepan Mesic´ award for his contribution to culture and other awards for his contributions to research and science.

 

In the 2011 parliamentary elections Dr. Grubišić was elected as an MP as an independent candidate on the list of the Alliance for Civil and Ethical Croatia, receiving approximately 65,000 votes.
